GOP?s unified front on guns beginning to crack.
Boneheaded and anti-woman comments by Rep. Phil Gingrey about ?legitimate rape? and abortion are burning up the internet today ? as they should. By accusing rape victims of lying to justify abortion, Gingrey helpfully demonstrates that the GOP?s War on Women is far from over, despite the fact that the party lost that war. Gingrey and others like him (think Paul Ryan) are like the clich?d Japanese soldier fighting WWII long after the war was over. It?s an important story and it?s good to see it?s getting the attention it deserves.
But it also makes it easy to overlook the fact that Gingrey has other things to say. So kudos to Greg Sargent for making the catch:
?GOP Rep. Phil Gingrey of Georgia ? who has an ?A? rating from the NRA ? has now signaled that he very well may support [two gun control] provisions. The Marietta Daily Journal has this account of a town hall meeting Gingrey held yesterday:
Gingrey said he was open to considering certain gun control measures in the wake of the Connecticut elementary school massacre.
?There are some problems, and maybe these huge magazines even for someone who says, ?look, I just use an AR-15 for target practice,? but do you really need to be standing there shooting at a silhouette a shot a second or even quicker with that kind of weapon? For what purpose?? Gingrey asked. ?I would be willing to listen to the possibility of the capacity of a magazine.?
Gingrey ? said he is also open to revisions of the so-called gun show loophole.
?What it is basically, if you go to a gun show and there?s somebody out there in the parking lot, and they?re getting out of their car, and they?ve got an A-15 on their shoulder or ?. John Q. Public wants to sell a handgun or whatever, then there?s no background check,? Gingrey said. ?You know, you?re buying a used weapon from somebody and then basically no background check.?
Keep in mind that these measures have very broad public support, including among Republicans. A recent CNN poll found that 97 percent of Republicans support background checks on all gun buyers, and 61 percent of Republicans support a ban on high capacity magazines.
So Gingrey?s not exactly staking out a bold position here, but he?s definitely parted ways with the NRA on this stuff. Gingrey is out on the way, way far crazy Tea Party right, so this is not a trivial thing and he?s probably not alone.
Gun apologists will argue that banning or limiting high-capacity magazines will harm ?responsible gun owners,? but keep in mind that no one believes they?re an irresponsible gun owner. So a lot of the people claiming to be responsible gun owners are not. And if you think you need a 30-round clip, it?s my opinion that this kicks you off the ?responsible gun owner? list. You?re a frootloop and the less firing capacity you have, the better off and safer the rest of America will be.
And closing the gun show loophole is just a no-brainer. If you don?t want to make sure the person you?re selling a gun to isn?t dangerous, this kicks you off the ?responsible gun owner? list as well.
What Gingrey is open to is nowhere near what is required ? but it?s a crack in the GOP?s pro-NRA wall. And cracks have a habit of spreading.
