Whatcha Say: Christina Aguilera's 'Lotus' Leak & Nicole Westbrook's ...

Over the past week, Christina Aguilera?s new LP Lotus leaked, while we typed up a defense of her previous album, the much-maligned Bionic. Ke$ha also premiered her video for ?Die Young,? and we offered up our poll for readers to vote on the best album of the year. Meanwhile, move over, Rebecca Black ? newcomer Nicole Westbrook arrived on the scene to take that terrible viral video crown with her holiday offering ?It?s Thanksgiving.?

Now head below for our weekly roundup of what you had to say about this pop tom-foolery!

:: Alsy woo-hoo?d on In Defense Of Christina Aguilera?s Bionic, As She Readies The Release Of Lotus: ?Wow I really enjoyed this especially the last line, ?but it will more likely be remembered as a guilty pleasure than a misunderstood masterpiece.? Well done Idolator and props to the writer.?

:: Kara also thought we were spot on with our assessment: ?I?ve actually argued this is exact point. Bionic didn?t fit in the time it was released and would have faired better either a year earlier or a year after. The timing issue is a big one, as the general ADHD feel of it could be overlooked (since, arguably, most pop artists today have very erratic sounds?.look at Rihanna and tell me I?m lying). It?s not a bad album, but it wasn?t good either. I think it was fun and is definitely a guilty pleasure. This was a really good article.?

:: @MartinLieberman was thankful for Nicole Westbrook?s ?It?s Thanksgiving? Is Already The Greatest Song Of All Time: ?Uh oh. Adam Sandler no longer lays claim to the best Thanksgiving song ever??

:: danny also chowed down on the stunning video: ?woah oh oh aye aye woah oh oh it?s thanksgiving! Awesome lyrics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And is she really singing with a turkey leg!!????!! OMG AWESOME.?

:: Jack felt K$?s new clip was jacked on Ke$ha?s ?Die Young? Video: Watch Her Get Sexy As A Cult Leader: ?They reaaalllly needed to go a little easier on the post-pro fx (like A LOT easier). From the looks of it, there was some pretty good orignal footage, unfortunately I couldn?t see any of it through the faux 3D red & blue, the geometric fragmenting, and the laser shapes. RE-EDIT PLZ?

:: Brian Scott T. exercised the democratic process on Vote For The Best Albums Of 2012 (Part 1): January Through June Releases: ?I think the two best albums from the start of the year to June belong to Lana Del Rey and Fun. Fun. has worked so hard to get where they are and they deserve all the success because their lyrics and production are top notch. Same goes for Lana. People criticized her for her SNL performance but that does not change the fact that she released an album with some of the most mesmerizing, confusing, beautiful, depressing, and overall brilliant songs. If Justin Bieber wins this poll it was be a sad day.?

:: Meanwhile, Alice was in wonderland over a different album: ?Adam Lambert?s TRESPASSING is in a class by itself, a planet by itself. Adam?s masterwork takes us on a whirlwind trip through the emotional highs and lows of his life. Brilliantly woven together into a soulful, heartwarming, footstomping blend of shades and hues, textures and tempos, TRESPASSING is a peerless musical adventure. Adam?s innate ability to relate to others with passion and compassion and his remarkable vocal and emotional range make this album a breathtaking, addictive work that seems to take up residence inside you.?

:: ptizzy sent a few people into a tizzy on Christina Aguilera?s Lotus Leak: Hear Standout Track ?Let There Be Love?: ?This is a rehash of Madonna?s Get Together from Confessions on a Dancefloor. I love Christina so much and I?m buying this album to support her, but she can do better. This is only marginally better than ?Your Body?.?

:: For instance, Vidal?: ?Your ass sounds like get together. We don?t need you to buy an album just out of pity. I can buy two of them or three including yours?

Google kicks Xperia S Android Open Source Project out of its nest, Sony takes it under its wing (video)

After just under three months of development, Google's wrapped up its experimental work on bringing the Sony Xperia S into the Android Open Source Project fold. According to Sony, AOSP Technical Lead Jean-Baptiste Quéru considers the effort a success, but the device is being taken off the project's roadmap so Mountain View can focus on its own hardware. Currently, an AOSP build boots on the Xperia S hardware with support for SD-Cards, Wi-Fi and its built-in sensors. Audio and the phone's modem are also operational, but they require proprietary binaries Hirai and Co. can't publish just yet. Work on polishing the handset's vanilla Android experience isn't over, however. Sony has moved the code to its GitHub account and is welcoming developers to pitch in and help with the open source effort. For more details and to see what code has already been laid down, tap the second source link or check out the video of the smartphone in action below.

Chrysler recalls about 745,000 Jeep SUVs in US

47 min.

Chrysler Group LLC is recalling almost 745,000 Jeep sport utility vehicles in the United States to fix a part that could cause the airbags to inadvertently deploy.

Chrysler, controlled by Italy's Fiat SpA, is recalling 744,822 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs from model years 2002 through 2004 because a part in the vehicles' airbag control module may fail, according to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A failure of that module could cause the front airbags, side curtain airbags and seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the SUVs are being operated, increasing the risk of injury or accident, according to NHTSA documents.

In October 2011, NHTSA opened a preliminary investigation relating to complaints of inadvertent airbag deployments in Liberty SUVs, according to the documents. In January 2012, the probe was upgraded to an engineering analysis to include the Grand Cherokee SUVs.

The probe found 215 cases of inadvertent airbag deployments that resulted in 81 minor injuries involving both SUVs, according to the documents. There were no crashes found to have been caused by inadvertent airbag deployment.

Chrysler's dealers will install a supplemental jumper harness to the airbag control module at no cost to owners. The recall is expected to begin in January.?

MDA hosting business development trip | WashingtonExaminer.com

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) ? The Mississippi Development is hosting a building/construction exposition and business development mission to the Caribbean.

The trip will be from March 1-7 with stops in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Officials say the trip will connect Mississippi firms in the building and construction industry with business opportunities in those three Caribbean markets.

Rose Boxx, MDA's Latin America trade specialist, says U.S. exports to the Caribbean have increased substantially over the past few years. She says the trip is an opportunity for Mississippi businesses whose products and services are used for construction projects to get into the market.

Drinking green tea with starchy food may help lower blood sugar spikes

ScienceDaily (Nov. 9, 2012) ? An ingredient in green tea that helps reduce blood sugar spikes in mice may lead to new diet strategies for people, according to Penn State food scientists.

Mice fed an antioxidant found in green tea -- epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or EGCG -- and corn starch had a significant reduction in increase in their blood sugar -- blood glucose -- levels compared to mice that were not fed the compound, according to Joshua Lambert, assistant professor of food science in agricultural sciences.

"The spike in blood glucose level is about 50 percent lower than the increase in the blood glucose level of mice that were not fed EGCG," Lambert said.

The dose of EGCG fed to the mice was equivalent to about one and a half cups of green tea for a human.

Lambert, who worked with Sarah C. Forester, postdoctoral fellow, and Yeyi Gu, graduate student, both in food science, said EGCG was most effective when the compound was fed to the mice simultaneously with corn starch. For humans, this may mean that green tea could help them control the typical blood sugar increases that are brought on when they eat starchy foods, like breads and bagels that are often a part of typical breakfasts.

"If what you are eating with your tea has starch in it then you might see that beneficial effect," Lambert said. "So, for example, if you have green tea with your bagel for breakfast, it may reduce the spike in blood glucose levels that you would normally get from that food."

The EGCG had no significant effect on blood sugar spikes in mice that were fed glucose or maltose, according to the researchers who released their findings in the online version of Molecular Nutrition and Food Research. Lambert said that the reason blood sugar spikes are reduced when the mice ate starch, but not these sugars, may be related to the way the body converts starch into sugar.

An enzyme called alpha-amylase that is produced in both the mouth and by the pancreas helps break down starch into maltose and glucose. EGCG may inhibit the enzymes ability to break down the starch, the researchers indicated, since they also found that EGCG reduced the activity of alpha amylase in the pancreas by 34 percent.

If the mechanism holds in humans, this may mean that people who want to limit the blood sugar spike should skip adding sugar to their cup of green tea.

"That may mean that if you add sugar into your green tea, that might negate the effect that the green tea will have on limiting the rise in blood glucose level," Lambert said.

Lambert added that the green tea and the starch would need to be consumed simultaneously. For example, drinking a cup of tea well after eating a piece of toast would probably not change the blood sugar spike.

For the study, researchers separated mice into several groups based on body weight. After a fasting period, the mice were given common corn starch, maltose, or sucrose. One group of mice received EGCG along with the feed, while a control group was not fed the compound.

The researchers then tested the blood sugar levels of both groups.

Lambert said the researchers next step is to test the compound on people.

"The relatively low effective dose of EGCG makes a compelling case for studies in human subjects," the researchers said.

(AP) ? His lease renewed in trying economic times, President Barack Obama claimed a second term from an incredibly divided electorate and immediately braced for daunting challenges and progress that comes only in fits and starts.

"We have fought our way back and we know in our hearts that for the United States of America, the best is yet to come," Obama said.

The same voters who gave Obama another four years also elected a divided Congress, re-upping the dynamic that has made it so hard for the president to advance his agenda. Democrats retained control of the Senate; Republicans renewed their majority in the House.

It was a sweet victory for Obama, but nothing like the jubilant celebration of four years earlier, when his hope-and-change election as the nation's first black president captivated the world. This time, Obama ground out his win with a stay-the-course pitch that essentially boiled down to a plea for more time to make things right and a hope that Congress will be more accommodating than in the past.

The vanquished Republican, Mitt Romney, tried to set a more conciliatory tone on the way off the stage.

"At a time like this, we can't risk partisan bickering," Romney said after a campaign filled with it. "Our leaders have to reach across the aisle to do the people's work."

House Speaker John Boehner spoke of a dual mandate, saying, "If there is a mandate, it is a mandate for both parties to find common ground and take steps together to help our economy grow and create jobs."

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell had a more harsh assessment.

"The voters have not endorsed the failures or excesses of the president's first term," McConnell said. "They have simply given him more time to finish the job they asked him to do together" with a balanced Congress.

Obama claimed a commanding electoral mandate ? at least 303 electoral votes to 206 for Romney ? and had a near-sweep of the nine most hotly contested battleground states.

But the close breakdown in the popular vote showed Americans' differences over how best to meet the nation's challenges. With more than 90 percent of precincts reporting, the popular vote went 50 percent for Obama to 48.4 percent for Romney, the businessman-turned-politician who had argued that Obama had failed to turn around the economy and said it was time for a new approach keyed to lower taxes and a less intrusive government.

Obama's re-election assured certainty on some fronts: His signature health-care overhaul will endure, as will the Wall Street reforms enacted after the economic meltdown. The drawdown of troops in Afghanistan will continue apace. And with an aging Supreme Court, the president is likely to have at least one more nomination to the high court.

The challenges immediately ahead for the 44th president are all too familiar: an economy still baby-stepping its way toward full health, 23 million Americans still out of work or in search of better jobs, civil war in Syria, an ominous standoff over Iran's nuclear program, and more.

Sharp differences with Republicans in Congress on taxes, spending, deficit reduction, immigration and more await.

And even before Obama gets to his second inaugural on Jan. 20, he must grapple with the threatened "fiscal cliff" ? a combination of automatic tax increases and steep across-the-board spending cuts that are set to take effect in January if Washington doesn't quickly come up with a workaround budget deal. Economists have warned the economy could tip back into recession absent a deal.

Despite long lines at polls in many places, turnout overall looked to be down from four years ago as the president pieced together a winning coalition of women, young people, minorities and lower-income voters that reflected the country's changing demographics. Obama's superior ground organization in the battleground states was key to his success.

The president's victory speech ? he'd written a concession, too, just in case ? reflected the realities of the rough road ahead.

"By itself the recognition that we have common hopes and dreams won't end all the gridlock, or solve all our problems or substitute for the painstaking work of building consensus and making the difficult compromises needed to move this country forward," Obama said.

"But that common bond is where we must begin. Our economy is recovering. A decade of war is ending. A long campaign is now over, and whether I earned your vote or not, I have listened to you, I have learned from you and you have made me a better president."

The president said he hoped to meet with Romney and discuss how they can work together. They may have battled fiercely, he said, "but it's only because we love this country deeply."

Romney's short concession ? with misplaced confidence, he'd only prepared an acceptance speech ? was a gracious end note after a grueling campaign.

He wished the president's family well and told subdued supporters in Boston, "I so wish that I had been able to fulfill your hopes to lead the country in a different direction, but the nation chose another leader and so Ann and I join with you to earnestly pray for him and for this great nation."

Obama's re-election was a remarkable achievement given that Americans are anything but enthusiastic about the state they're in: Only about 4 in 10 voters thought the economy is getting better, just one quarter thought they're better off financially than four years ago and a little more than half think the country is on the wrong track, exit polls showed.

But even now, four years after George W. Bush left office, voters were more likely to blame Bush than Obama for the fix they're in.

It wasn't just the president and Congress who were on the ballot. Voters around the country considered ballot measures on a number of divisive social issues, with Maine and Maryland becoming the first states to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote while Washington state and Colorado legalized recreational use of marijuana.

From the beginning, Obama had an easier path than Romney to the 270 electoral votes needed for victory. The most expensive campaign in history was narrowly targeted at people in nine battleground states that held the key to victory, and the two sides drenched voters there with more than a million ads, the overwhelming share of them negative.

Obama claimed at least seven of the battleground states, most notably Ohio, the Ground Zero of campaign 2012. He also got Iowa, New Hampshire, Colorado, Nevada, Virginia and Wisconsin, and he was ahead in Florida. Romney got North Carolina.

Overall, Obama won 25 states and the District of Columbia and was leading in too-close-to-call Florida. Romney won 24 states.

It was a more measured victory than four years ago, when Obama claimed 365 electoral votes to McCain's 173, winning with 53 percent of the popular vote.

Obama was judged by 53 percent of voters to be more in touch with people like them. More good news for him: Six in 10 voters said that taxes should be increased. And nearly half of voters said taxes should be increased on income over $250,000, as Obama has called for.

Obama's list of promises to keep includes many holdovers he was unable to deliver on in his first term: rolling back tax cuts for upper-income people, immigration reform, reducing federal deficits, and more.

A second term is sure to produce turnover in his Cabinet: Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has made it clear he wants to leave at the end of Obama's first term but is expected to remain in the post until a successor is confirmed. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's rival for the presidency four years ago, is ready to leave too. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta isn't expected to stay on.

To the end, the presidential race was a nail-biter. About 1 in 10 voters said they'd only settled on their presidential choice within the last few days or even on Election Day, and they were closely divided between Obama and Romney. Nearly 1 percent of voters went for Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, who was on the ballot in 48 states.

In an election offering sharply different views on the role of government, voters ultimately narrowly tilted toward Obama's approach.

"We have seen growth in the economy," said 25-year-old Matt Wieczorek, a registered Republican from Cincinnati who backed the president. "Maybe not as fast as we want it to be, but Obama has made a difference and I don't want to see that growth come to an end."

Notwithstanding his victory, Obama will lead a nation with plenty of people who were ready for a change.

"The last four years have been crap," said 73-year-old Marvin Cleveland, a Romney supporter in Roseville, Minn. "Let's try something else."

Nor'easter Threatens Sandy Victims

As those facing the devastation left in the wake of Sandy continue to seek shelter, meteorologists point to a new threat -- a nor'easter heading for devastated areas.

The storm could pack 50-mile-per-hour gusts in coastal areas, 1 to 3 inches of rain from New York to Boston and a continuation of the frigid temperatures that followed last week's superstorm.

It's a situation that has some doctors worried that many of those affected by Sandy could face a life-threatening situation in the form of hypothermia.

"Many left without power and heat will be at risk of hypothermia as the Nor'easter is scheduled to hit the New York City and New Jersey area," said Dr. Sharon Horesh Bergquist, assistant professor of medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

The strong wind and rain is expected to hit the New Jersey and New York coast early Wednesday morning. Worse, some models are predicting a 40-50 percent chance of snow in the metro New York area by Wednesday night, and winds up to 40 miles per hour are expected to continue into Thursday.

The Red Cross is increasing efforts in New York, offering shelter to roughly 9,000 people and handing out an additional 80,000 blankets Monday night -- a clear indication of where the organization's concerns lie when it comes to those without heat or shelter.

"Certainly one of our biggest concerns is the cold, because you have people without power," said Red Cross spokeswoman Melanie Pipkin. "We're ramping up our efforts so these people have even more blankets, more hand warmers. We really want to make sure everyone stays warm."

Hypothermia occurs when the body's temperature falls below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. This puts people at risk to develop serious lung, heart, or nervous system problems, sometimes leading to death.

Symptoms of hypothermia include appearing confused or intoxicated or shivering, although shivering actually stops at severely cold body temperatures.

"As people get colder, they actually stop shivering, losing their ability to retain any heat," said Dr. Darria Gillespie, emergency physician at Harvard Medical School in Boston. "They may also almost appear intoxicated, with confusion, clumsiness, slurred speech, and fatigue."

In the most serious of cases, the potential complications from hypothermia can be severe, even fatal.

"The complications can range from minor cold related illness to death from prolonged exposure or complications from prolonged exposure," said Dr. Henderson McGinnis, emergency physician at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The very young and very old may be at the highest risk.

"The elderly often have difficulty with thermoregulation and infants have a relatively larger body surface area thus are at increase heat loss risk," said Dr. Christopher Russi, emergency physician at the Mayo Clinic.

As for preventative measures, seeking shelter and warm clothes is the overwhelmingly popular recommendation.

"Those without heat need to find a place with it as the temperatures fall these next few nights, dressing in layers and wearing a hat and avoiding alcohol are key factors to prevent it as well," said Dr. Robert McNamara, chair of emergency medicine at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

The Red Cross' Pipkin says it is "hard to speculate" as to what the worst case scenario would be in terms of the nor'easter's impact on those affected by Sandy. But she says that it would be unwise to underestimate the approaching storm.

"We always try to prepare for the worst," she said.

Public-safety communications fare better than commercial networks ...

Commercial communications outages caused by Superstorm Sandy and subsequent flooding cannot be repeated on the proposed nationwide LTE network for first responders that will be built under the supervision of the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet), public-safety advocates have said in the aftermath of the storm.

A week ago, the FCC reported that about 25% of commercial cell sites in the affected area were not operational, according to a statement from David Turetsky, chief of the agency?s public-safety and homeland-security bureau. As of yesterday morning, the percentage of cell-site outages was less than 9%, Turetsky said in a statement provided today to Urgent Communications.

An FCC spokesperson was unable to provide similar information about any outages suffered by public-safety LMR networks, and Turetsky has not mentioned these networks in his statements to the media. However, early indications from state departments of transportation indicate that public-safety agencies in the affected area have been able to maintain communications in the aftermath of Sandy, according to William Brownlow, telecommunications manager for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

For the most part, public-safety LMR systems have remained operational, according to input Brownlow has received from the states of New York and New Hampshire, primarily because LMR towers have been hardened to withstand such conditions, with generators providing backup power when the commercial electric grid is down.

?The general takeaway from this is that public safety?s requirements are not the same as commercial providers?the need for backup generators is absolutely crucial,? Brownlow said during an interview with Urgent Communications. ?I think that?s the message that needs to be made clear to FirstNet.?

New Hampshire?s department of transportation had seven of its 18 sites running on power provided by backup generation, according to a report provided to Brownlow. Getting additional fuel to a couple of the generators was a problem at one point, and a microwave antenna had to be realigned, but these issues were all addressed within 12 hours, according to the report.

In New York, there were some network problems, but the department of transportation reported ?no real issues? in these areas, Brownlow said.

?They were using the talkaround feature on radio, which you cannot do on a cell phone,? he said.

Commercial wireless carriers do provide backup power to many key sites in their networks, but providing backup power to all sites is not an option for fiscal and logistical reasons?backup power can be expensive to maintain, and diesel generators are not allowed on most rooftops, which is where many cell sites are located.

?The sites built on buildings are the most vulnerable, as opposed to the ones built on towers, for two reasons,? mobile wireless consultant Andrew Seybold said during an interview with Urgent Communications. ?Number one, buildings don?t withstand 100-mph winds the way towers do. Number two, you can?t put a generator on the roof, so you put a generator on the ground or in the basement, and it floods.?

There has been discussion of increasing reliability to first responders by also including network access to multiple commercial carriers, with the hope that at least one of them would have an operational system.

?Most of the towers that failed had two or three [commercial] operators on them,? Seybold said. ?So, even FirstNet?s plan of multiple network operators in a given phone would not have helped the situation.?
