According to NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim, the Android partners? new launch will have a 2,560-by-1,600-pixel display with a density of about 299 pixels per inch. The third-generation iPad, Apple?s latest tablet offering, sports a 9.7-inch screen with a 2,048-by-1,536 pixel display that with a density of 264 PPI. And the price range is expected to reflect that. ?It?s going to be a high-end device,? Shim told CNET about the new device. The analyst said his supply chain sources indicated that there was a high possibility that the product will see light of day soon.

Skydiver begins daring bid to break sound barrier

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) ? Lifted by a massive balloon, extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner ascended high above Earth on Sunday in his bid to complete a death-defying 23-mile free fall that could make him the first skydiver to break the sound barrier.

Baumgartner took off in a pressurized capsule carried by a 55-story ultra-thin helium balloon that is expected to ascend high above the New Mexico desert for nearly three hours. If plans go as expected, Baumgartner, in a high-tech suit, will then jump into a near vacuum with no oxygen to begin what is expected to be the fastest, farthest free fall from the highest-ever manned balloon.

Any contact with the capsule on his exit could tear the pressurized suit, a rip that could expose him to a lack of oxygen and temperatures as low as minus 70 degrees. That could cause potentially lethal bubbles to form in his bodily fluids

Coincidentally, Baumgartner's attempted feat also marked the 65th anniversary of U.S. test pilot Chuck Yeager successful attempt to become the first man to officially break the sound barrier aboard an airplane.

At Baumgartner's insistence, some 30 cameras recorded the event Sunday. While it had been pegged as a live broadcast, it was actually under a 20-second delay.

Shortly after launch, screens at mission control showed the capsule as it rose above 10,000 feet, high above the New Mexico desert as cheers erupted from organizers. Baumgartner also could be seen on video checking instruments inside the capsule.

Baumgartner's team included Joe Kittinger, who first attempted to break the sound barrier from 19.5 miles up in 1960. With Kittinger inside mission control Sunday, the two men could be heard going over technical details as the launch began.

"You are right on the button, keep it right there," Kittinger told Baumgartner.

An hour into the flight, Baumgartner had ascended more than 63,000 feet and had gone through a trial run of the jump sequence that will send him plummeting toward Earth. Ballast was dropped to speed up the ascent.

Kittinger told him, "Everything is in the green. Doing great."

By 11:15 a.m. MDT, he had reached more than 100,000 feet above Earth. Organizers earlier had estimated the jump to occur at roughly 12:30 p.m., though that timing was tentative.

If he succeeds in the death-defying feat, the man nicknamed "Fearless Felix" will break the 52-year-old altitude record by Kittinger, who reached a speed of 614 mph, just under the sound barrier.

This attempt also will be the end of a five-year road for Baumgartner, a record-setting high-altitude jumper. He already made two preparation jumps in the area, one in March from 15 miles high and on in July from 18 miles high. It will also be the end of his extreme altitude jumping career; he has promised this will be his final jump.

Dr. Jonathan Clark, Baumgartner's medical director, has told reporters he expects the pressurized spacesuit to protect him from the shock waves of breaking the sound barrier. If all goes well and he survives the jump, NASA could certify a new generation of spacesuits for protecting astronauts and provide an escape option from spacecraft at 120,000 feet, he said.

Jumping from more than three times the height of the average cruising altitude for jetliners, Baumgartner's expects to hit a speed of 690 mph or more before he activates his parachute at 9,500 feet above sea level, or about 5,000 feet above the ground in southeastern New Mexico. The total jump should take about 10 minutes.

The energy drink maker Red Bull, which is sponsoring the feat, has been promoting a live Internet stream of the event from nearly 30 cameras on the capsule, the ground and a helicopter. But organizers said there will be a 20-second delay in their broadcast of footage in case of a tragic accident.

After the jump, Baumgartner says he plans to settle down with his girlfriend and fly helicopters on mountain rescue and firefighting missions in the U.S. and Austria.

Fly genomes show natural selection and return to Africa

When ancestral humans walked out of Africa tens of thousands of years ago, Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies came along with them. Now the fruit flies, widely used for genetics research, are returning to Africa and establishing new populations alongside flies that never left ? offering new insights into the forces that shape genetic variation.

That's one of the findings from two new papers published this month by researchers at the University of California, Davis, and their colleagues that describe the genomes of almost 200 strains of the tiny flies.

The work reveals strong evidence of pervasive natural selection throughout the D. melanogaster genome, said Charles Langley, professor of genetics in the Department of Evolution and Ecology at UC Davis and an author on both papers. That is in striking contrast with what is known of the human genome, which shows comparatively little evidence of adaptation over the last 100,000 years.

The overall aim of the research is to better understand the forces that shape genetic variation, Langley said. Human geneticists are working to sequence a thousand human genomes to get at the same issue. The knowledge from studying fly genetics has and will help in that effort, he said.

"Most of the theory and statistical methods in human genetics were originally motivated by studies of flies, because they're easier and faster to work with," Langley said. "Model organisms like these play a critical role in developing tools and ideas."

The first paper, published Oct. 1 in the journal Genetics, reports the genomes of 37 strains of Drosophila collected in Raleigh, N.C., and six strains from the sub-Saharan nation of Malawi. The other paper, to be published in Public Library of Science Genetics and currently available online as a preprint, describes the genomes of 139 fly strains covering 22 African and one European population.

Drosophila melanogaster, like humans, originated in Africa, and that's where they show the most genetic diversity ? just as humans do. The flies are thought to have appeared in Europe about 50,000 years ago, along with modern humans. On the way, both humans and flies squeezed through genetic bottlenecks that reduced the diversity in the population. Over generations, different fly strains evolved quite specialized niches ? such as a fondness for colonizing breweries, for example.

But the African fly genomes show that just in the past couple of decades, flies similar to those found in Europe or the U.S. have established populations back in Africa, often in new environments such as urban and industrial developments. For example, where modern breweries and bottled beer have displaced traditional African brewing, "Europeanized" brewery flies have followed.

The spread of those "European" genes is more rapid than if it were occurring by random processes, the researchers write.

"It may be that urbanization and development favor the more 'European' flies," Langley said.

Questions rise over Tunisian party's moderateness

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? Leaked conversations mentioning alcohol bans and the imposition of religious law have raised fears that Tunisia's new government may not be as moderate as it appears, especially in the context of mob attacks on the U.S. Embassy that coincided with the killing of the American ambassador in neighboring Libya.

The leaks, however, may also just be attempts by the secular opposition or religious conservatives to embarrass the moderate Islamist Ennahda Party before next year's elections.

Tunisia's social media sites were flooded Wednesday by first a video, then a phone recording showing Rachid Ghannouchi, the founder of the once-banned Ennahda Party that dominated recent elections, appearing to discuss how to gradually Islamize society and triumph over secularism.

Ennahda said in a statement the video, from February, was heavily edited to make Ghannouchi appear to be more extreme than the party's actual positions.

"A number of sentences and sections were taken out of context and edited in such a way as to misrepresent their meaning in a deplorable return to the old methods of vilification used by the former regime," party official Ameur Larayedh said in a statement.

But Tunisia's secular opposition has been up in arms, saying it is proof of longstanding claims that Ennahda's modest rhetoric masks a radical Islamist agenda. On Thursday, opposition party member Noaman Fehri called for a judicial investigation of Ghannouchi, saying it is "evident that he does not believe in democracy, but wants to install a new dictatorship."

The recordings also have threatened Ennahda's relationship with its coalition partners. And their emergence comes amid real worries about Tunisia's direction after several thousand demonstrators burst through minimal security and stormed the U.S. Embassy compound in Tunis last month, tore down the American flag and looted and burned buildings.

Non-essential embassy personnel have been withdrawn and have yet to return, and the U.S. government advised all Americans to leave ? a sad state of affairs for the country that kicked off the region-wide Arab Spring of pro-democracy uprisings and was seen as one of the best hopes for the region, with its small, well-educated and homogenous population.

It is especially serious in light of the attacks in neighboring Libya where four diplomats, including the ambassador, were killed in an assault, throwing U.S. relations with that country into question, not to mention shattering any lingering optimism over the ease of its democratic transition.

The U.S. was not initially pleased with the Tunisian government's tepid response to the Tunis attack, though it has since been mollified by more vigorous measures to boost security.

"There was incompetence clear to any eye for those who were in charge of securing the embassy," senior Ennahda official Said Ferjani told The Associated Press. "It's our 9/11 and we really have to sort it out and make sure that everything has been dealt with properly in the framework of the law."

He said the video was an effort by Ghannouchi at the time to encourage the Salafis ? ultraconservative Muslims who insist on the immediate imposition of Islamic law ? to take a gradual approach and work within the system to advance their beliefs rather than through violence.

"We have to make sure that the whole Salafi trend isn't pushed into the lap of al-Qaida. We have to isolate the violent elements," he added. "He is trying to convince them that the soft approach, the moderate approach, is the best one."

Ennahda has said that it would never impose Islamic law and is comfortable with parties seeking to govern in a secular fashion. It has compromised with other parties in keeping references to Islamic law out of the first article of the constitution and abandoned attempts to change language about men and women being equal to being "complementary," which had worried women's rights activists.

The appearance of a damning video or audio recording was a staple of the old system under President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, when foes of the regime would be discredited with tapes often recorded by the omnipresent intelligence services.

Tunisians overthrew Ben Ali in January 2011, ending his 23 years of iron rule, and then elected a governing coalition led by his arch foes, the Ennahda Party.

"That feels to me like a very standard piece of tactical political combat in Tunisia, this practice of using video tapes to impugn people's reputations and mine their credibility," said Chris Alexander, a Tunisia expert at North Carolina's Davidson College. "It wouldn't surprise me if they had leaked it with the purpose of embarrassing Ghannouchi."

The question of who produced the tape has been hotly debated in Tunisia. The secular opposition, which is weak and divided in the face of Ennahda's commanding 40 percent bloc in parliament, has long been trying to paint the party as cousins to the Taliban.

Many also believe, however, that it could be the Salafis themselves, who after all were the ones privy to the meetings.

Tunisian police have arrested scores of Salafis for their alleged role in the attack on the embassy. Almost 100 are in custody, with some facing charges that could involve the death penalty, their lawyers say.

Ennahda has also let the Salafis down by agreeing with the secular parties not to say in the new constitution that all legislation must be based on Shariah, or Islamic law, a common clause in other Muslim nations but never in more progressive Tunisia.

"They are working hard to influence the editorial process that the draft constitution is going through," noted Alexander. "They are really upset the way Ennahda has been willing to moderate its positions."

The real damage to Ennahda from the incident could be its relations with its two coalition partners, the leftist Congress for the Republic and Ettakatol (Forum) parties.

"It is dangerous and contradicts the spirit of democracy and the values of tolerance of the Muslim religion," said Mohammed Bennour, the Ettakatol spokesman, while Imed Daimi of the CPR described the video as a "source of concern."

Ennahda went a long way to burnish its democratic credentials when it immediately sought to form a coalition with secular parties, despite its commanding position in the parliament.

In recent months, though, strains have appeared in the coalition with Ennahda and President Moncef Marzouki, who comes from the CPR party, having several public spats.

The mandate for the elected assembly is set to expire Oct. 23, a year after the elections, which will require the ruling coalition to agree on how the country will be managed until new legislative and presidential elections, expected next spring, are held.

"What's happening in Tunisia is not only the ordinary politics, the election campaign has started and demonizing Ennahda is crucial (for the opposition)," Ferjani said.

Kenner Police will help open up the New Orleans-area celebrations of National Night Out Against Crime Sunday with the department's 13th Annual Kick-Off Party. The free event, which includes demonstrations by local law enforcement agencies, live music and children's activities, will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. at Laketown in Kenner.

The event is a prelude to Tuesday's National Night Out Against Crime, or at least the local version of the neighborhood gatherings which encourage residents to turn on their porch lights and unite in crime prevention. Most of the country celebrated the event back on Aug. 7.

But New Orleans-area police departments, sheriff's offices and community groups delayed the gatherings until the Fall for the first time last year because of complaints about sweltering temperatures in August. Departments followed suit again this year after seeing higher attendance numbers.

Kenner's National Night Out Against Crime Kick-Off Party will include booths with representatives from the Kenner Police Department, the New Orleans Police Department, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, the Gretna Police Department, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the FBI and State Police.

The event will feature free food and live music throughout the day by New Orleans-based band Karma. Football fans will also catch a break with several large-screen televisions broadcasting the games. Other scheduled events include:

• ?2:30 p.m.: U.S. Coast Guard helicopter demonstration
• ?3:30 p.m.: Kenner Police and JPSO SWAT demonstration
• 4 p.m.: Kenner Police K-9 demonstration.

The kick-off party will be held Sunday at Laketown on Williams Boulevard located at Lake Pontchartrain next to the Kenner boat launch and Treasure Chest Casino. Night Out Against Crime will be celebrated throughout the New Orleans area Tuesday.

The Tribez sets up camp on Android

The Tribez, a popular free casual sim game for iOS, has just migrated to Google Play. A lot of the same ol' FarmVille shtick is here, where you need to check in on your buildings collect coins, grow your settlement, and supplement your progress with in-app purchases if you're feeling it. There's not much in the way of multiplayer here, but there are a bunch of missions to embark upon, resources to exploit, buildings to construct, and a little pet dinosaur to train. Over time, you can expeand your territory over 6 islands in the prehistoric area. 

I've put a fair bit of time into The Tribez, and the graphics are surprisingly good for this kind of game. The in-app purchases can be a little on the pushy side, but if you're looking for a game that's a notch or two more casual than SimCity, The Tribez may be worth checking out - especially since it's free.

Clarksville, TN ? The Woodward Library Society at Austin Peay State University will hold its annual fall program next week, featuring a presentation by a history faculty member from Purdue University.

Dr. Susan Curtis, professor of history at Purdue, will present ?The Politics of Memory: Archives, Historic Preservation and Lessons of the Past? at 7:00pm, Thursday, October 18th in the Morgan University Center Ballroom B and C.

The event is sponsored by the Woodward Library Society, the Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center and the APSU Honors Program. There is no cost, and it is open to the general public. Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the presentation.

In addition to her teaching duties, Curtis is director of American studies at Purdue University. Her recent research has focused on the meaning of American culture in a multiracial and multiethnic society.

Curtis earned a B.A. at Graceland College and an M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Missouri. She teaches courses in U.S. cultural history, American studies, and the history of religion in America.

Curtis has published three major works: ?A Consuming Faith: The Social Gospel and Modern American Culture? (1991), which demonstrated the interplay between sacred and secular realms in the reformulation of Protestant thought and practice between the 1880s and 1920s; ?Dancing to a Black Man?s Tune: A Life of Scott Joplin? (1994), which used the life of Scott Joplin to examine the cross-racial collaboration at the turn of the century that resulted in ragtime, a quintessentially American popular music; and ?The First Black Actors on the Great White Way? (1998), which places the landmark event noted in the title in the cultural context of the U.S. on the eve of World War I.

The Woodward Library Society is an organization of library friends dedicated to the advancement of APSU?s Felix G. Woodward Library. The purpose of the society is to strengthen the resources of the Woodward Library and to increase awareness of those resources.

Founded in 2009, the society is a nonprofit organization affiliated with the APSU Foundation. Membership is open, upon payment of annual dues, to any person, business, or organization that shares in the purpose of the society.

Inflation rises again, thanks to higher gas prices

U.S. producer prices rose more than expected in September as the cost of energy surged, a government report showed on Friday, but underlying inflation pressures were muted.

The Labor Department said its seasonally adjusted Producer Price Index increased 1.1 percent last month.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected prices at farms, factories and refineries to rise 0.7 percent last month.

Despite the rise in overall wholesale inflation last month, there is likely to be little pass-through to consumers given sluggish job growth, which puts a brake on inflation.

Wholesale prices excluding volatile food and energy were flat last month. That was the lowest reading since October 2011 and fell short of analysts' forecasts.

Consumer inflation is currently below the Federal Reserve's 2 percent target, and many economists think it will trend below that level for years to come.

In a bid to boost economic activity, the Fed launched an aggressive new stimulus program last month, pledging to buy $40 billion of mortgage-backed debt a month until the outlook for jobs improves substantially.

Overall producer prices last month were buoyed by a 4.7 percent increase in energy prices. Higher gasoline costs drove the increase. Wholesale diesel prices also contributed, rising 9.2 percent, the biggest one-month gain since December 2010.

Food prices rose 0.2 percent, backing off of the faster pace of price increases seen over the summer when a severe drought pushed up the cost of grain and soybeans.

In the 12 months to September, producer prices increased 2.1 percent, biggest gain since March, after advancing 2 percent in August.

Outside food and energy, producer prices were restrained by a decline in the cost of communication equipment.

Core producer prices increased 2.3 percent in the 12 months to September.

The Fallacy of "Follow Your Passion" | Michael Ruhlman

Is it passion? Desire? What is it? What should you follow?

The word is passion and I used to hear it from chefs. ?I can teach you to cook, but I can?t teach passion,? they would say. I took this at face value from so many chefs I can?t tell you, until I didn?t anymore because I realized it meant exactly nothing. Thomas Keller, the chef from whom I have learned the most, and the most by far, noted this a while back as well. Passion is the wrong word, he said. Desire was what he wanted to see in a young cook.

What, really, though, is that elusive quality that makes a great chef, a great musician, a great anything? It?s not passion, and I?m not sure it?s desire either. A lot of people have passion for something they aren?t good at. In my twenties I was passionate about writing fiction and worked really, really hard at it. I had great desire to achieve, and did, after much bloodletting, complete two novels. But they weren?t any good; my agent failed to place them. A lot of good passion did me then!

As I wrote in my recent Kindle Single The Main Dish, I had no desire to become a writer about food and cooking, and look at me now. And yes, I?m passionate about it, but it was directed by something Not Me. The journalist and author, Daniel Coyle, author of The Talent Code?and?The Little Book of Talent, asked on his always thought-provoking blog, should we follow our passion? I hear this advice given a lot, especially in the food world, ?Follow your passion.? Coyle says this is really bad advice. Because the fact is, for most of us life is difficult, we?re faced with myriad choices, and few are born?being passionate about something specific.

I learned to write because I did it for 20 years?I just did it, though I wasn?t very good it for a very, very long time?and then I figured out what made a sentence, then a paragraph, then a story work, and then I learned to write hard and fast and well because I was terrified. Let me tell you, people, fear motivates. Fear of poverty, fear of working in a cubicle. I learned to cook first out of hunger?literally. I was hungry, alone, and I liked to eat. And then I learned how to really cook out of anger. I didn?t learn to cook because I was passionate about cooking. So what is it that makes Jonathon Sawyer at his Greenhouse Tavern such an exciting cook, someone who combines foie scraps and clams for one of the best/simplest dishes on earth, and who wraps pork in donut dough and deep-fries it (?Sloppy Jonut? it?s called)? Those cooks out at Animal, same deal.

Or Grant Achatz, what is it that pushes him to create some of the most far-out dishes in America? (What was that weird red, flag-shaped centerpiece, smoking on my table at Alinea? By the time this nitrogen-frozen slice of beef had melted, it was ready to become part of dish number 9 in a 26-course tasting meal.) Alinea is not for everyone. I have good friends from Cleveland who actually went to a McDonald?s after eating at Alinea, they hated it so much. Here?s an important fact: Grant doesn?t give a shit. I mean he wants to please his customers, but that?s not why he does what he does.

Monday night I went to see one of my heroes, Neil Young (thank you, Joseph Daniel Sullivan, for the tickets!) playing with Crazy Horse, which is a goofy garage band of AARP 13-year-olds who can still, after all these years, rock the house. Neil Young. Remember those pink suits and Trans? God, some real disasters in a career that also produced timeless albums I don?t need to mention, as well as lesser-known classics such as On the Beach, Zuma, and Time Fades Away, a fabulous album I can?t find anymore.

It was fantastic to see Old Neil grinding and cranking in a 66-year-old body, a bit of a potbelly hanging over his jeans, a serious turkey waddle, and singing in that voice that hasn?t changed in 40 years and with an energy that had the whole crowd on its feet for ?My My Hey Hey.? The guy is still rocking, hard.

I?ll cut to the chase: All of the folks mentioned above did what they had to do before passion had anything to do with it. They did something and opened themselves up to passion. Passion flowed in behind the work. They did what they had to do first. Neil Young does what the fuck Neil Young wants to do, and fuck you all if you don?t like it. Do you think Grant cares that a lot of people think his Modernist cuisine is too ridiculous for words? No?and he?ll point those people to the nearest Cheesecake Factory and get back to work.

When I was out at the French Laundry in 1998 where Grant, who at the time looked like he was in fifth grade, worked the fish station, I asked Keller what he wanted this book, The French Laundry Cookbook we?were working on, to do. We were all, me most of all, trying to figure out what the hell I was doing out there hanging out in the kitchen. He said, ?I want it to inspire people.?

He was right about that, like so much else. Inspiration. That?s the ?it? I was looking for when I sat down to write this post. I didn?t know what ?it? was 30 minutes ago, but now I do, because writing is how I figure things out. But it?s not inspiration?that I want those young people emerging into adulthood to hear, and it?s not passion; that?s not what I want to tell my 17-year-old daughter who has no idea what she wants to do with her life. And I?m certainly not going to tell her to follow her fucking passion. I couldn?t give anyone more useless advice.

What will I say to her and to anyone who will listen? This: Everyone has the capacity for passion built into them, it?s part of being human. You need to set yourself up to receive inspiration. Be ready to let inspiration flood into you. Be ready for it, because you never know when it?s going to come. You can?t make it happen. You can?t will inspiration; maybe you went to the wrong station and the train never shows up, and then you die. Happens. No guarantees. But odds are if you work really hard, it comes. You move through this life, making hard decisions, trying to hurt as few people as you can, trying to have a good time, trying to pay the bills. Just make sure you?re ready. We make our own luck by showing up, working our asses off, and then, out of nowhere, something that is Not You lifts you off the ground.

• 2 tablespoons minced shallot
• 2 ounces butter
• salt to taste
• 1 dozen middle-neck clams
• 1/4 cup decent white wine
• 1 cup or 6?8 ounces foie gras scraps, even foie p?t?
• 2 slices of seriously good crusty country style bread, toasted or grilled
• 1 bottle very good white wine
• 2 glasses excellent brandy or single-malt scotch (optional)
• 1 pot of coffee

1. Sweat the shallot in a medium saut? pan over medium heat in some of the butter till soft, hitting them with some salt as you do.
2. Add the clams and 1/4 cup wine, cover the pan, and bring a simmer. As the clams begin to open, add the rest of the butter and the foie gras and swirl the pan until the butter is melted.
3. Remove from the heat when all the clams are open. Taste the broth, and if it doesn?t taste perfect, add a dash of wine vinegar or lemon juice or more salt.
4. Divide the clams, foie, and sauce between two bowls.
5. Give one bowl to your lover and eat it with the bread, and drink the wine, taking your time.
6. If the conversation is still going, have a glass of the brandy or whiskey.
7. Have sex.
8. Snooze for a little.
9. Make a pot of coffee and get back to work.

Walmart workers threaten Black Friday action

The latest news in the Walmart labor protests -- which have included walkouts and marches in Dallas, San Diego, Chicago and Los Angeles -- is the threat of a strike on Black Friday. That's the day after Thanksgiving, widely considered the busiest, and most lucrative, retail day of the year.

Some 200 angry protesters showed up at a meeting of investors and analysts earlier today at Walmart's headquarters in Bentonville, Ark. Under discussion at the meeting was Walmart's intent to go head-to-head with Amazon and offer same-day delivery.

Walmart is the world's largest private employer and has long been a target of workers' rights groups, who advocate higher wages, more flexibility in hours and an end to the punishments (reduced shifts, for instance) they claim are meted out to workers seeking to unionize.

Evelin Cruz, a department manager at Walmart in Pico Rivera, Calif., told ABC News that for many years she kept quiet about what she views as the company's unjust labor practices because she feared she would be fired if she spoke up.

"People were really tired that any time they would speak out against the pay, hours, how much they would work, that management would cut their hours or not give them a schedule," said Cruz, who is one of thousands of members of Our Walmart, a labor organization backed by the United Food and Commercial Workers that defends Walmart workers' rights.

On a conference call today, leaders of Our Walmart, the National Consumers League and other labor groups said they will join Walmart workers outside stores on Black Friday if their demands are not met.

NOW president Terry O'Neill said her organization would join in the action on Black Friday, it was reported in the Guardian. "We are standing in solidarity with the workers who are walking off the job," said the National Organization of Women's president.

Last Thursday, about 30 employees from the Pico Rivera store, including Cruz, wielded signs that read "Stand Up, Live Better, Stop Retaliation" and "Stop Trying to Silence Us" and marched outside the store. At the same time, workers at eight other Walmart stores in California protested working conditions and treatment.

It was the first-ever employee walk-out in the company's 50-year history, said Dawn Le, a spokeswoman for Making Change at Walmart, a coalition whose mission is to change the way Walmart conducts business.

"Everyone else has a union," said Le. "Workers in every other country ? Japan, the U.K., Nicaragua, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina ? have been able to form a union, except the U.S. and Canada. We just don't understand the double standard Walmart has. How come those in other countries get to have a voice, yet not in the U.S., its home country?"

Walmart spokesman Dan Fogleman disputed Le's charges, claiming that most employees have "repeatedly rejected unionization.

"They seem to recognize that Walmart has some of the best jobs in the retail industry ? good pay, affordable benefits and the chance for advancement," he said in a telephone interview with ABC News.

Walmart and its practices have made the news a lot lately. In mid-September, warehouse workers in Southern California were on a 15-day strike that included a six-day, 50-mile pilgrimage for safe jobs. Around the same time, hundreds of people marched in Dallas and San Diego, demanding better work conditions.

On Monday, Chicago police dressed in riot gear arrested 17 peaceful protesters blocking the entrance to a warehouse operated by an outside contractor that supplies Walmart stores, in Elwood, Ill. The protestors were there to show support for workers who had been on strike since Sept. 15, the Chicago Sun Times reported. What's more, the company faces yet another sex discrimination lawsuit, filed on behalf of 100,000 women in California and Tennessee.

VALHALLA, October 11, 2012A New York Medical College developmental biologist whose life's work has supported the theory of evolution has developed a concept that dramatically alters one of its basic assumptionsthat survival is based on a change's functional advantage if it is to persist. Stuart A. Newman, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, offers an alternative model in proposing that the origination of the structural motifs of animal form were actually predictable and relatively sudden, with abrupt morphological transformations favored during the early period of animal evolution.

Newman's long view of evolution is fully explained in his perspective article, "Physico-Genetic Determinants in the Evolution of Development," which is to be published in the October 12 issue of the journal Science, in a special section called Forces in Development. The paper has been selected for early online publication and a podcast interview with the scientist*.

Evolution is commonly thought to take place opportunistically, by small steps, with each change persisting, or not, based on its functional advantage. Newman's alternative model is based on recent inferences about the genetics of the single-celled ancestors of the animals and, more surprisingly, the physics of "middle-scale" materials.

Animal bodies and the embryos that generate them exhibit an assortment of recurrent "morphological motifs" which, on the evidence of the fossil record, first appeared more than a half billion years ago. During embryonic development of present-day animals, cells arrange themselves into tissues having non-mixing layers and interior cavities. Embryos contain patterned arrangements of cell types with which they may form segments, exoskeletons and blood vessels. Developing bodies go on to fold, elongate, and extend appendages, and in some species, generate endoskeletons with repeating elements (e.g., the human hand).

These developmental motifs are strikingly similar to the forms assumed by nonliving condensed, chemically active, viscoelastic materials when they are organized by relevant physical forces and effects, although the mechanisms that generate the motifs in living embryos are typically much more complex. Newman proposes that the ancestors of the present-day animals acquired these forms when ancient single-celled organisms came to reside in multicellular clusters and physical processes relevant to matter at this new (for cellular life) spatial scale were immediately mobilized.

The unicellular progenitors are believed to have contained genes of the "developmental-genetic toolkit" with which all present-day animals orchestrate embryonic development, though they used the genes for single-cell functions. It was precisely these genes whose products enabled the ancestral clusters to harness the middle-scale physical effects that produced the characteristic motifs. And since not every ancestral cluster contained the same selection of toolkit genes, different body forms arose in parallel, giving rise to the modern morphologically distinct animal phyla.

Natural selection, acting over the hundreds of millions of years since the occurrence of these origination events led, according to Newman's hypothesis, to more complex developmental processes which have made embryogenesis much less dependent on potentially inconsistent physical determinants, although the "physical" motifs were retained. As Newman describes in his article, this new perspective provides natural interpretations for puzzling aspects of the early evolution of the animals, including the "explosive" rise of complex body forms between 540 and 640 million years ago and the failure to add new motifs since that time. The model also helps us to understand the conserved use of the same set of genes to orchestrate development in all of the morphologically diverse phyla, and the "embryonic hourglass" of comparative developmental biology: the observation that the species of a phylum can have drastically different trajectories of early embryogenesis (e.g., frogs and mice), but still wind up with very similar "body plans."

Animal bodies and the embryos that generate them exhibit an assortment of recurrent "morphological motifs" which, on the evidence of the fossil record, first appeared more than a half billion years ago. During embryonic development of present-day animals, cells arrange themselves into tissues having non-mixing layers and interior cavities. Embryos contain patterned arrangements of cell types with which they may form segments, exoskeletons and blood vessels. Developing bodies go on to fold, elongate, and extend appendages, and in some species, generate endoskeletons with repeating elements (e.g., the human hand).

These developmental motifs are strikingly similar to the forms assumed by nonliving condensed, chemically active, viscoelastic materials when they are organized by relevant physical forces and effects, although the mechanisms that generate the motifs in living embryos are typically much more complex. Newman proposes that the ancestors of the present-day animals acquired these forms when ancient single-celled organisms came to reside in multicellular clusters and physical processes relevant to matter at this new (for cellular life) spatial scale were immediately mobilized.

The unicellular progenitors are believed to have contained genes of the "developmental-genetic toolkit" with which all present-day animals orchestrate embryonic development, though they used the genes for single-cell functions. It was precisely these genes whose products enabled the ancestral clusters to harness the middle-scale physical effects that produced the characteristic motifs. And since not every ancestral cluster contained the same selection of toolkit genes, different body forms arose in parallel, giving rise to the modern morphologically distinct animal phyla.

Natural selection, acting over the hundreds of millions of years since the occurrence of these origination events led, according to Newman's hypothesis, to more complex developmental processes which have made embryogenesis much less dependent on potentially inconsistent physical determinants, although the "physical" motifs were retained. As Newman describes in his article, this new perspective provides natural interpretations for puzzling aspects of the early evolution of the animals, including the "explosive" rise of complex body forms between 540 and 640 million years ago and the failure to add new motifs since that time. The model also helps us to understand the conserved use of the same set of genes to orchestrate development in all of the morphologically diverse phyla, and the "embryonic hourglass" of comparative developmental biology: the observation that the species of a phylum can have drastically different trajectories of early embryogenesis (e.g., frogs and mice), but still wind up with very similar "body plans."

Spotify App Will Land On Samsung Smart TVs Later This Year

Samsung has signed a deal with Spotify to bring the streaming music service to Samsung's Smart TV range, Blu-ray players and home theatre systems later this year. It appears to be the first TV manufacturer to do so. This is a significant distribution deal for Spotify and will help to tip it over into mainstream consumer application territory. It'll mean TV purchasers having instant on-demand access to a library of over 18 million tracks, so long as they are Spotify Premium users. New users will be able to test the service for an (unspecified) limited time period for free, and the service will be included for all existing Spotify Premium users with a compatible Samsung internet-connected Smart TV.

Kathys Cluttered Mind: Learning About Our Fine Feathered Friends

This is the last week we will be studying birds. There is so much to learn about our Fine Feathered Friends and I know we didn't cover everything I had hoped too. But I am pretty sure it is one of those topics that the kids will most likely wish to do again when they are a little older.

This week F is for Fine Feathered Friends. We learned about having birds as pets this week. We discussed the different types of birds that you can have as pets, how to care for them and more. We also read several books on parrots and a couple on chickens since they can be pets too.

Then kids painted a picture of what they would like their pet bird to look like. The kids drew their birds with black crayon then painted them in with RoseArt watercolors. Aren't they lovely?
And we took our final bird unit study fieldtrip to a local Aviary. The kids got to pet, hold and even feed some Amazon Parrots and Sun Conures. We also saw a Ringneck Alexandrine Parakeet, a Ringneck Derbyan Parakeet, a Umbrella Cockatoo, a Red Breasted Cockatoo, African Grey and a few others. I am so grateful to Brightwood Aviary for opening their doors to our family. This fun, FREE, fieldtrip got high marks from Gwyn my animal loving 6 yr old who hopes to one day be a Veterinarian, Farmer or Zookeeper.

We haven't gotten to this part yet but we will be using the Petsmart website to learn about the cost of owning a pet bird, pet bird care and choosing the right pet bird. The plan is to do this Friday. We may even make some bird puppets too.?

Coastal uses sister act for success, family atmosphere | Grand ...

Coaches talk about their teams being a family, and that goal is just a bit easier this season for the Coastal Carolina women?s soccer squad. Having two sets of sisters on the roster takes family ties to a new level.

Identical twins Amanda and Alyssa Clark from Waxhaw, NC, started their junior years at Coastal this season, and sisters Kacey and Darbie Kelley from Ashburn, VA, are a couple of years a part, but soccer runs in family genes.

Not only have the sisters found time to bond on and off the field with their siblings, but they have built an extended family in the Lady Chants (5-6 overall, 2-2 Big South), who are coming back-to-back shutout wins this past week against Liberty and Longwood.

?The team is one of my favorite things about being at Coastal. I have never been so close to any other team,? said Alyssa, as all of the girls agreed. ?We always hang out together. We are all friends. We are all like sisters and like family.?

Normal family time usually consists of some board games, going to the movies, sharing dinner at the table, or sharing family traditions. These four connect with each other, but they also connect on the soccer pitch leading them against Big South Conference foes all season.

The Lady Chanticleers have allowed just 11 goals all season while scoring 16. The timing and execution of the precise goals seems to have slipped by their laces on several opportunities. CCU has outshot its opponents 111-96 on the season. They have lost four games by one goal, with three of those being edge-of-your-seat, down-to-the-wire games in Conway.

Alyssa and Amanda, who played at Marvin Ridge High School where they led them to the 2010 North Carolina 3A State Championship, have identical looks, but often play on opposite sides of the field. Amanda often plays outside forward or midfield on the right. Alyssa plays on the left as one of the bookend defenders, alongside Maddie Phillips on the right, with Cami Skladany holding the middle together with Megan Wagner.

Alyssa had two shots this season in eight games played. She has started in seven of those contests. Amanda often plays forward or midfield, and has tallied one shot this season. She has played in all nine games in 2012, having started in six for the Lady Chants.

Often times, they do connect passes together on the field, and the on-field connection can in many ways be attributed to their family connection.? Amanda commented on having a chance to play alongside her twin.

?It is a blessing. She is my best friend. It is also a lot easier being with my sister. My older sister also lives down here,? said Amanda about being around family. ?A lot of girls don?t even have the chance to play college soccer, so getting to play with your sister is just like a double win.?

The twins have two similar yet distinctive personalities. Alyssa tends to be more of the vocal leader. Alyssa said how she likes to cook Italian food, and she tells jokes keeping the other girls laughing. She likes to have the girls over and cooks for them. She joked that she cooks and Amanda cleans. They have a Columbian heritage that can also be found in her recipes, according to Alyssa.

?(Our favorite part) is when I tell jokes. One of the best things is that she always gets my jokes, but I am really funny,? said Alyssa. ?When we are playing together, we know what each other is going to do.?

Amanda and Alyssa, the daughters of John and Soni Clark, are both exercise and sports science majors. They commented how their coaches sometimes get them mixed up. ?Our coaches are always `A. Clark, A. Clark`, but we are both A. Clark,? said both Alyssa and Amanda.

CCU head women?s soccer coach Paul Hogan commented on the twins and their contributions to the team. ?The twins are both best friends on and off the field. They finish each other?s sentences. That often happens with identical twins. They are both comedians and sarcastic in their own way. That is the New York personality coming out in them.?

While Amanda is glad to be back on the field after dealing with injuries for much of 2011, she has tallied one goal and one assist in 24 CCU games. She started in nine games during her career. Alyssa has totaled two goals and three assists for her career. She has played in 35 games, having started in 28 through her first three seasons. She earned second team All-Big South honors last season at Coastal.

?It is nice to have her (Amanda) back healthy,? said Hogan. ?Both of them are very consistent in how they play and what they do. They are such a spark to our team. The twins are just so hard working. They lead by example and are so fit. Our team goal is to get to their work rate.?

Kacey and Darbie, the daughters of Beverly and Kevin Kelley, played high school soccer at Broad Run High School in Ashburn. Kacey helped led her high school team to 51 consecutive wins from 2008-2010. In her first season at Coastal, she played in 19 games and started in 10 games, and tied Alyssa for the team lead in 2011 with two goals. She added 15 shots, with nine of those being on frame.

During her 2011 season, Kacey finished with 1,093 minutes played, including 90 minutes when the team played North Florida. So far for the 2012 season, Kacey has played and started in seven games for Coastal. She currently leads the team with four goals scored. She has had 23 shots with 10 of those being on goal. Both totals lead the team so far this season. Kacey was named the Big South Conference Attacking Player of the Week earlier this season and was awarded the Big South Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com.

?Darbie and Kacey are very close. Kacey has taken on more of a leadership role on our team,? Hogan said about the sisters. ?Darbie had a great freshmen spring. She is getting better and better each week. As long as she continues on that trend, she should have a very good four years for us.?

Kacey commented on having her sister join the rest of her Coastal soccer family. ?It is a way of bringing home to your college,? said Kacey. ?Whenever I start missing home, I just go over and hang out with her.?

Darbie, who has played in all nine games as a freshman so far in 2012, has totaled one assist this season. She has one shot on goal for CCU. She enjoys playing alongside Kacey and has found a home away from home with her teammates wearing the black and teal.

?It is a lot easier having a sister here with you. It is easier with family always around you. You never get homesick,? said Darbie. ?It just feels more comfortable being out here with her on the sports field.?

Darbie was a two-time regional and state champion in high school helping lead her team to a 46-2-1 record. She has a drive about her to make her mark just as her sister has done in the Big South.

?Coming in being the kid sister and following what she did last year is a challenge, but it is nice getting to play alongside her,? Darbie said about Kacey.

Both of the sisters have been leaders for the team so far in 2012 in different ways, according to Hogan.
?Darbie shows more leadership through her play,? Hogan added. ?Kacey has been more of a vocal leader for us this year, but she also leads through her play.?

The family traditions that these two sets of sisters possess has been carried over to their second families at Coastal, and they hope that family tree branches off into success in Big South play.
