This promising open source ?big data? startup needs a staff Technical Writer with programming experience ? or an ex-Developer who wants to write ? to create developer reference documentation and how-to tutorials.
If you can read and understand Java code, have programmed (even as a hobby), and can untangle complex technology for busy developers, you?ll thrive in this role. What you write will help programmers get stuff done with Hadoop, the Apache open-source framework for big data.
The right cultural fit is a passionate techie with the assertiveness, curiosity, and technical credibility to enjoy a dynamic, engineering-driven startup environment. This is not the right role for those who like predictable, hierarchical workplaces.
You?ll work onsite in San Jose gathering information from local and remote SMEs, using the product, and authoring in Confluence. You?ll join a team of a pubs manager and two senior-level staff tech writers, all of whom are eager to help newcomer tech writers develop their skills.
This is a staff/salaried, fully onsite job offering a competitive salary, full benefits, bonuses, and pre-IPO stock options. The company is willing to sponsor a visa for a non-national, and will relocate the right candidate to the Bay Area. Relocation assistance will be via a sign-on bonus (with one-year retention requirement) rather than pre-payment or reimbursement.

- Solid background (academic or professional) programming in Java
- Proven desire to explore programming tools and ecosystems
- Demonstrated interest in creating documentation about complex software for sophisticated users
- Understanding of data storage concepts
- Sharable, relevant writing samples and reachable references

- Ability to work onsite in San Jose, CA (traveling at your own expense)
Desired:
- At least two (2) years? professional experience programming in Java
- Working knowledge of UNIX/Linux
- Familiarity with Confluence, Photoshop, and Camtasia (or similar tools)
- Quality portfolio of developer-oriented software reference documentation
