Death and dying, a more personal post. And some acupuncture at ...

I?m a month away, now, from my grandmother?s husband?s death. ?This was her 4th husband. ?She is 90 years old, and each of her fellas has died. ?Her own health isn?t very good. ?My grandmother does have family to help, as well as an employed family friend. Thank goodness she has all of that, and yet I know it all still felt like just too much to go through. ?How lonely to loose your partner, how silent the house, how foggy the future. What are the late nights like now, for her, when she can?t hear another person breathing down the hall? ?And what was the hospital like? Had she said to herself ? ?he will come home this time, he always does. And where will she live? ?The house belonged to her husband, but his daughter has been the upstairs tenant. ?Will his daughter now sell the house, or rent my grandmother?s living space for income? ?After all, she cares for her own paralyzed husband. ?My questions don?t stop. ?

When I think about it, my mind gets stuck on what it must be like to age with death so often at hand. ?I?m in my early 40s, and I haven?t quite hit that stage with my peers starting to pass on, but I know it?s a?comin?. In general, my experience with death has been of the early-in-life variety, or just academic. ?I?m eventually going to talk about acupuncture, here, but let me first tell you about how a young nerd, such as myself, surrounded herself with deathy matters.?

I can easily say that the most powerful death experience in my life thus far is my father?s suicide more than 10 years ago. (I don?t even know what tense to write that sentence in). Probably the most professionally formative, however, would have been my years volunteering on a suicide hotline.

As a framework for how I have viewed death and dying, I should say that since I was a kid, I?ve always been pretty interested in death as subject matter.

I wanted to be an Egyptologist when was I was 7 (I?ve since learned that?s not an uncommon aspiration among career-minded, preteen nerds). ? From about that age through high school, I was obsessed with books about World War II prison camps and post war Russian prison camps. ?I figured if someone could survive something like a prison camp, I could survive my lower middle class existence pretty well. And of course, when I was 13, I discovered the color black, the skull as a design motif, and dark punk music and electronica. ?This is why my undergrad thesis was on ways culture and society define our death experiences, and how contemporary life has done away with so many rituals that helped people ?pass on? from our First World lives. ?These random experiences set me up to be certain that I would study to become a bereavement counselor. ?Oh the drama! Obviously, though, ?that?s not the career path I took, once I found out that there was more to life than death. Funny that took me until I was in my extreme late twenties.

And so here I am, more than ten years later, in my early forties ? and I am beginning research into how to get my acupuncture services into a hospice! ?A friend recently asked me if I had ever heard of a death-doula. ?I certainly had not, but was mightily interested. ?They can be referred to as death-midwives, as well as some other names. ?Amazing, right? I?ve had birth doulas, which I can?t recommend enough. Doulas are AWESOME. But a death doula? ?Someone to advocate for the patient and family in a very special way? Here is a link to a death doula site. How wonderful to have have someone dedicated to helping people live in the foggy realm of the dying, and to assist survivors to come back home.?

For myself, the idea of being able to meld my historic interest in death and dying with my profession as an acupuncturist, seems perfect.

Acupuncture ? to help the body to ground and also let go, as needed. ?To help with pain and discomfort. ?To help with nausea, to help with mood changes. ?All of these issues, for dying people and the ones around them, can be addressed with acupuncture and herbs. ?

Breathwork ? to help calm the mind and nervous system, to ease digestion, to quell panic. To accept and manage pain. To accompany dying, the last few moments or hours. Exercises to do with loved ones, all together and alone, while living through the experience of someone dying.?

Do you know anyone who has had acupuncture for death and dying issues? Have you had a death doula? I?m fascinated by these things and want to learn more. ?And I hope, ?as I create a 5 year plan for my business Hundred Grasses, to begin some work with this population.?

Feds sue to block Anheuser's takeover of Modelo

1 hr.

The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit to block Anheuser-Busch InBev's proposed purchase of the rest of the Mexican brewer Grupo Modelo it doesn't already own in a move that jeopardizes Constellation Brands' plans to fully acquire Crown Imports.?

Such a merger, the government contends, would substantially reduce competition in the U.S. beer market, resulting in higher prices and less selection.

Anheuser's Bud Light is the best-selling choice in the $80 billion a year beer market. ?"Even a small increase in the price of beer could result in billions of dollars of harm to American consumers," the Justice Department said.?

With no apparent intent to commit a pun, the government said?it seeks "to prevent the companies from merging and to preserve the existing head-to-head competition between the firms that the transaction would eliminate."

Constellation shares plummeted about 20 percent Thursday, triggering several trading halts, after news of the development broke. Crown Imports brings brands owned by Grupo Modelo into the United States.?

Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer, said it would contest the lawsuit, adding in a statement that it is "inconsistent with the law, the facts and the reality of the marketplace."

"We remain confident in our position, and we intend to vigorously contest the DOJ's action in federal court," the company said.

Grupo Modelo said it now?doesn't expect the deal to go through in the first quarter.?

In a statement, Constellation Brands expressed disappointment with the Justice Department's decision.?

"The proposed transaction would further establish Crown Imports as a more independent and competitive entity and solidify is position as a major player in the U.S. beer industry," Constellation said, in a press release.?

CNBC and Reuters contributed to this report.

Bruised Fruit Isn't Bad For You, But It May Mold Quicker

Bruised Fruit Isn't Bad For You, But It May Mold QuickerEating bruised fruit isn't very appealing, but that doesn't make it bad for you. Slate's Brian Palmer explains why there's no reason you shouldn't make use of it.

When fruit is bruised, its skin is compromised, allowing oxygen into the fruit itself. Oxidized fruit results in cellular damage and the flesh turning brown and mushy. As gross as it may look, it isn't bad for you at all?but do be on the lookout for mold, as bruised fruit is more susceptible to infection:

If your bruised fruit has visible microbial growth, is it still safe to eat the nondamaged portion? It depends on the fruit. The question is whether the roots of the mold have penetrated the food. It's difficult for mold to grow deep into firm fruits. So feel free to cut away the moldy portion of a bell pepper-yes, bell peppers are a fruit-and eat the remainder. Bananas, on the other hand, are too soft to repel a mold invasion, so a banana with a bruised, moldy spot should be tossed.

And for those fruits that are just a bit bruised here and there and may be too unsightly to eat whole? Feel free to do what The Kitchn commenters recommend and use them to make other things: banana bread, fruit salad, and smoothies are all great ideas.

Japan industrial production up 2.5 percent in Dec.

(AP) ? Japan's industrial production picked up pace in December from the month before, in a sign the world's third-largest economy may be stabilizing thanks to stronger global demand and government spending.

Increased output of large passenger cars and vehicle components and machinery for making semiconductors were the main factors helping to drive the improvement in manufacturing, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said Thursday. It said industrial output rose a seasonally adjusted 2.5 percent from November.

The government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is already claiming progress in breaking the deflationary slump that has weighed on Japan's growth for years. Share prices are approaching three-year highs and many companies have reported improved profits thanks to a weakening of the Japanese yen against other major currencies

Since Abe took office on Dec. 26, his administration has pushed ahead with a 20 trillion yen ($220 billion) stimulus package, a hefty proposed budget for the coming fiscal year and a commitment by the central bank to unlimited monetary easing to help spur growth.

All that spending is meant to break the cycle of falling prices that is thought to be hindering business investment and hobbling growth.

"Generating enough demand to create a sustained recovery has been an uphill battle for policymakers," Moody's said in a commentary Thursday citing barriers to growth such as Japan's shrinking workforce and high savings rate. "Together, these moves could kick-start a recovery, assuming that stronger growth in Asia helps revive Japan's exports as well," it said.

Challenged by opposition lawmakers to explain how Japan can afford to boost spending when its national debt is already twice the size of the economy, Abe insisted his plan would balance the national budget by 2020. He also defended his administration's reliance on public works projects.

"I intend to have a deep discussion of the plans and seek public understanding to ensure transparency," Abe said during the televised legislative exchange.

Higher tax revenues are expected to help offset some of the increased spending: Earlier this week the government raised its forecast for economic growth in the fiscal year that starts April 1 to 2.5 percent from 1.7 percent.

While higher government spending can boost demand in the short run, growth can only be sustained through corporate investment, job creation and rising purchasing power.

Figures released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare on Thursday, however, showed average monthly wages, including overtime and bonuses falling to 314,236 yen ($3,453), the lowest level since such data became available in 1990.

The ministry, which based the data on a survey of 33,000 companies, attributed the drop to the rising use of part-time or temporary workers, who accounted for nearly 29 percent of all workers in 2012.

December's increase in industrial output compared with a month-on-month drop of 1.4 percent in November. Most analysts had forecast an improvement of more than 4 percent in December.

METI said inventories fell 1.1 percent from the month before while shipments rose 4.4 percent.

Online forex trading: Fundamental analysis (2) ? The Punch ...

Economic indicators are snippets of financial and economic data published regularly by governmental agencies and the private sector. These statistics help market observers monitor the economy?s pulse? and measure the health of a given country and its currency- so it is no surprise that they are religiously followed by almost everyone in the financial markets. But, just like a doctor monitoring a patient?s vital signs, not all stats count equally.

With so many people poised to react to the same information, economic indicators have tremendous potential to generate volume and to move prices. It might seem like you need an advanced economics degree to parse all this data accurately ? but in fact, traders need only keep a few simple guidelines in mind in making trading decisions based on this data. Know exactly when each economic indicator will be released through economic calendars on some sites such as www.fxstreet.com, www.forexfactory.com, www.forex.com, etc. Your broker may also provide this on their website or as daily analysis for you. Watching the economic calendar not only helps you consider trades around these events, it helps explain otherwise unanticipated price actions during those periods.

You need not understand every nuance of each data release, but you should try to grasp key, large-scale relationships between reports and what they measure in the economy. For example, you should know which indicators measure the economy?s growth (gross domestic product, or GDP) versus those that measure inflation (PPI, CPI) or employment strength (non-farm payrolls).

Not all economic indicators can move markets. The market often pays more attention to certain indicators under certain conditions ? and that focus can change over time. For example, if prices (inflation) are not a crucial issue for a given country, but its economic growth is problematic, traders may pay less attention to inflation data and focus on employment data or GDP reports. Some sites help traders by placing some signs to show the volatility of the data which may be low, medium or high

Key economic indicators

Gross domestic product

The sum of all goods and services produced either by domestic or foreign companies. GDP indicates the pace at which a country?s economy is growing (or shrinking) and is considered the broadest indicator of economic output and growth.

Industrial production

A chain-weighted measure of the change in the production of the nation?s factories, mines and utilities, industrial production also measures the country?s industrial capacity and how fully it is being used (capacity utilisation). The manufacturing sector accounts for one-quarter of the major currencies? economies, so it is critical to watch the health of factories and whether their capacity is being maximised.

Purchasing managers index

The National Association of Purchasing Managers, now called the Institute for Supply Management, releases a monthly composite index of national manufacturing conditions. The index includes data on new orders, production, supplier delivery times, backlogs, inventories, prices, employment, export and import orders. It is divided into manufacturing and non-manufacturing sub-indices.

Producer price index

Measures average changes in selling prices received by domestic producers in the manufacturing, mining, agriculture, and electric utility industries. The PPIs most often used for economic analysis are those for finished goods, intermediate goods, and crude goods.

Consumer price index

Measures the average price level paid by urban consumers (80 per cent of the population in major currency countries) for a fixed basket of goods and services. It reports price changes in over 200 categories. The CPI also includes various user fees and taxes directly associated with the prices of specific goods and services.

Durable goods

Durable Goods Orders measures new orders placed with domestic manufacturers for immediate and future delivery of factory hard goods. A durable good is a product that lasts over three years, during which its services are extended. Companies and consumers sometimes put off purchases of durable goods during tough economic times ? so this figure is a useful measure of certain kinds of customer demand.

Employment cost index

Payroll employment is a measure of the number of jobs at larger companies in more than 500 industries in all 50 US states and 255 metropolitan areas. ECI counts the number of paid employees working part-time or full-time in the nation?s business and government establishments.

Housing starts

Measures the number of residential units on which construction is begun each month. A ?start? refers to excavation of the foundation of a residential home.? Housing is usually one of the first sectors to react to interest rate changes. Significant reaction of start/permits to changing interest rates signals interest rates are nearing trough or peak. To analyse, focus on the percentage change in levels from the previous month. Report is released around the middle of the following month.

Trading strategy tips for economic indicators

A trader will notice that fluctuations begin prior to the news being released. The actual data released is compared against the forecast or at times previous. Positive value or negative value will determine the position to take in the market. Depending on the expected volatility use Limit or pending orders at resistance or support levels prior to the time. Orders could also be stacked around support or resistance level with low take profit pips and at times high volume depending on your equity.

Q&A with Warm Bodies author Isaac Marion | People's Critic: Film ...

Author Isaac Marion?s breakout novel, Warm Bodies, started as a short story and has blossomed into a feature film. I sat with Isaac to discuss his involvement in the film, what characters he identified with, and where he would go in a real zombie apocalypse.

I read an interview you did with Wired where you talked about being involved with the Warm Bodies movie. What was that process like?

Isaac Marion: Coming to the set wasn?t really involvement; it was a courtesy to invite me to watch. My involvement was earlier in the process where they would consult me on people they thought about casting. They didn?t ask for my approval, it was more or less ?This is what we?re thinking?, and it was giving notes on the script. When Jonathan Levine was writing the script, he would call me up and ask me what I thought. I gave notes on the script and notes on an early cut of the movie. It wasn?t collaboration, but they were interested in my opinion. It didn?t feel like a courtesy brush of either. It was surprising because I heard that doesn?t happen often.

I hear that a lot. They?ll invite authors on set and tell them, ?Thanks for coming, but this is the direction we?re going with this movie?.

IM: If I had a problem with the direction maybe we would?ve bumped heads. I knew what direction they were going to go. I understood why, so I didn?t have a problem with it. It was more about the execution. It was apparent to me from the beginning they weren?t trying to mangle the story.

When you started with the Warm Bodies short story, did you have any idea where it was going?

IM: No. Even less so than anything else I?ve written. When I wrote the story it was a departure from the regular stuff I write. It was more lighthearted and more pop culture-y. Using zombies isn?t something I normally do. It was a very short story about a zombie talking about life in the apocalypse. I didn?t even know if I wanted to post it. I was thinking, ?This is dumb.? [laughs] I put it out there and people loved it. It got me thinking a little more and wondering if there was a deeper story. That story became apparent as I expanded to write the novel. When I first started that was the furthest thing from my mind. Even as I was writing it was like ?Hey. I?m writing a zombie novel?. I never thought this would be my creative find.

I think people relate to zombie stories like The Walking Dead or Dawn of the Dead the same way they do with Warm Bodies. R?s character in Warm Bodies is on this path and he desperately wants his life to change. He?s going around in circles and he?s not sure how he got there. A lot of people live that life.

IM: Warm Bodies ended up becoming one of the most personal relatable things I?ve written. As I was figuring out the story, it lined up with a lot of feelings I was having at that time in my life. It was actually about my experience with the world and trying to figure out who I am. It was trying to establish a connection to the rest of society and humanity. I understand people not expecting to take it seriously. Most reviews that I read start with ?This sounded like a stupid idea, but it went in a different direction?. I?m glad it?s a surprise and is catching people off guard.? With the movie, the promotion is geared a bit younger. You go expecting a lighthearted movie, but it?s a lot deeper than the trailer suggest. The book is even darker and heavier than that.

Most of the personal stories we tell are a little dark.

IM: When I was writing I wasn?t thinking ?Let me write this zombie novel?. I was thinking about this really dark story I had in my head and it somehow ended up coming out through the vehicle of zombies and I wanted people to see it how I saw it. From the outside it looks like dumb concept. At best it looks like silly concept that could be a entertaining romp.

What character in the book do you relate to the most?

IM: R is somewhat based on me, or at least an earlier version of me before I figured out how to function in the world. I put a lot of myself into R. The combination of R and Perry is more or less who I am. I put a lot of my feeling and experiences into them. I was much more alienated when I was younger. My gap between what I thought in my head and what I expressed was much more pronounced back then so I drew on that experience.

Have you always been a writer?

IM: I started writing with serious intent when I was 14 when I started writing a book. I always dabbled in it and wrote little books. It occurred to me that I could write a book when I was 14 so I created two installments of what was going to be an epic fantasy series, but they?re terrible. Nobody is going to see them as long as I?m alive. In my early 20?s I wrote one more that?s a bit more serious.

I feel like each thing I?ve written is drastically better than the last thing, sometimes by huge leaps. Hopefully that trend will continue.

Did Warm Bodies present any crazy reactions from your friends and family due to the subject matter?

IM: There were two sides to that reaction ? one of them is from people like my mom or grandmother. They hear about it and want to support. The book keeps getting pitched as a Young Adult book, but there?s stuff I didn?t want my parents reading in there. I had to grit my teeth and deal with it. On the other side is the reaction from my smart friends who say ?You?re writing about zombies huh? That?s where you?re going with your literary career?? [laughs].

I was on Twitter watching people?s responses to the Warm Bodies trailer. A lot of them were turned off because it looked like Twilight with zombies.

IM: You should?ve seen the reactions before the trailer came out. A lot of people were put at ease by the trailer because before that was a promo image that looks a lot like the Twilight poster and everyone though it was a joke. The image was never intended to be the poster, but it got out there and they put it side-by-side with Twilight. They told me to leave it on and it would all go away [laughs].

I know some of your original story had to be omitted because of the PG=13 rating. Was there anything you hoped they kept in the film?

IM: As far as content, I knew they were planning to go for the PG-13 rating. It wasn?t going to be gory or have creepy necrophilia sex. I guess it?s not necrophilia if the two corpses are having sex [laughs]. I knew that stuff wouldn?t be in the movie. Honestly, they got away with a lot more than I thought they would. I was happy with that.

The rating system is all over the place.

IM: They have some bizarre rules. There is actually a number of times you can say certain words. Technically you can say the f-word once in any PG-13 movie but it?s related to what else is in the movie too.

There was a f-bomb in X-Men First Class.

IM: The great thing about is they used it in the perfect moment.

Was there a scene in the film that you were happy at how it turned out?

IM: I was really amazed at how rich the environments were with the budget they had. I Am Legend did it well, but they had a $100 million budget. I feel like Warm Bodies achieved similar effects with clever locations and getting the angles right. One of the biggest parts was this abandoned airport they found in Montreal. I always thought they would never find an airport, and they?d have to replace it with a coffee shop. The airport was already run down and they dressed it up some more. Most of the time I was on set was when they were shooting there. It was just how I imagined it with the fog, sun coming through the windows, and debris all over the place. It felt like a different world.

If there was a zombie apocalypse, where?s the first place you?d go.

IM: It depends on what type of zombies. Fast or slow?

Fast zombies and the disease isn?t airborne. You have to be scratched or bitten to get infected.

IM: Probably go gather up as much supplies as I could and head for the country. It?s a tough question. In Warm Bodies, they find stadiums and hold up in there. In that world it?s not only the zombies you have to worry about, it?s the people. It?s probably smart to be walled in.
